Classifying the Confinement of Photons in Photonic Structures by Machine Learning
Suppose you have invented or even made a new and typically complex photonic crystal in which you would like to confine the photons in some nifty way. Chances are that in addition to the confinement you originally had in mind, there are multiple other ways in which light is confined, or half-confined, or quasi-confined, etc. […]

Retirement Cock Harteveld
On September 26, 2023, after 14788 working days at the UT, of which 7939 days spent at COPS, the day of retirement has inevitably arrived for Cock Harteveld. Not yet completely letting go of COPS, Cock will support projects for one day a week, such as supervising Saxion HBO project students, or installing a new […]

Masters’ thesis defense of Bert Mulder
On the 31st of august 2023, Bert Mulder successfully defended his masters’ thesis titled “Ultra-Broadband Phase sensitive_reflectivity_of_photonic_crystals” and obtained his MSc degree in Applied Physics. The project was carried out under supervision of Willem Vos, Cock Harteveld, and Melissa Goodwin.   Featured image: Phase sensitive reflectivity spectrum of a silicon direct woodpile crystal.

Protecting light communication with random objects
Researchers from the Complex Photonic Systems (COPS) group used two layers of random materials to encrypt and decrypt a message sent via light communication. With that, they hid the sender and receiver simultaneously, and only when the light passed through both layers was the message received. The research team published their findings in the journal […]

Bachelor’s Thesis defence of Joost van den Oudenrijn
On July 6th, 2023, Joost van den Oudenrijn successfully defended his Bachelor’s thesis titled “Decay Rates of Quantum Dots Inside 3D Photonic Band Gap Crystals“. The project was supervised by Timon Vreman and prof. Willem Vos. Congratulations!

COPS presents @ CLEO-Europe and Laser World of Photonics 2023 congress
This week (starting Monday 26th June) the leading International Congress on Photonics in Europe is being held in Munich, Germany, including the giant LASER2023 trade show and multiple leading conferences (including CLEO-Europe). COPS is happy and proud to actively participate “in force” to showcase our latest results. Following a brilliant talk by Alfredo Rates this […]

Niels Alferink starting his masters’ assignment at COPS
Last week, Niels started his Masters’ assignment at COPS. Niels will be working on building an optical coherence tomography (OCT) based setup for measuring reflection matrices of scattering media. Further methods, like single value decomposition of the matrices, will be used to enhance the imaging depth of OCT to allow for imaging deep inside scattering […]

Etching for the ideal photonic crystal
How good a photonic crystal is is very dependent on the fabrication. Large deviations from the ideal result in decreased photonic strength, shifting of the band gap and inconsistencies across the crystal. Our inverse woodpile crystals are created by etching pores in two perpendicular directions. In an ideal world, these pores would be completely cylindrical. […]

COPS & MESA+ visit the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo
This spring, Willem Vos, Melissa Goodwin and Mike Dikkers from COPS and MESA+ Nanolab visited the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) in Chōfu, Tokyo. UEC specialises in the disciplines of computer science, the physical sciences, engineering and technology and was founded in 1918 as the Technical Institute for Wireless-Communications. We visited the group of prof. Takeyoshi […]
