COPS & MESA+ visit the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) in Tokyo
This spring, Willem Vos, Melissa Goodwin and Mike Dikkers from COPS and MESA+ Nanolab visited the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) of the University of Tokyo. Willem Vos: “It was fantastic to finally have an opportunity to visit our friends and colleagues live after the pandemic and be able to intensively discuss with them and […]

Bert Mulder starting his Masters’ assignment at COPS
Last month, Bert Mulder started his Masters’ assignment at COPS. Bert will be working on building a broadband pulse interferometry setup to measure the group velocity dispersion in inverse woodpile photonic crystals.

Optics Seminar by Optics Netherlands (#OpticsNL)
On February 7, 2023, an enjoyable seminar was held in the Mikrocentrum in Veldhoven, sponsored by Holland High Tech and organized by the Optics Netherlands core team (including COPS scientist Willem Vos), in particular Anke Peters, where a number of scientists convened, in particular high-tech industry. Compared to its size, the Netherlands has a remarkable […]

Linda Bitenc completes her internship project
On December 15th, 2022, Linda Bitenc completed her internship project at COPS as a part of the Erasmus Traineeship program. Linda successfully improved and rebuilt parts of a setup to probe the position-dependent energy density inside scattering samples. Using the setup she improved, she did measurements on samples with randomly positioned Si Pillars as scatterers. The […]

Controllable steering of light by a single nanoparticle
Light scattered by nanoparticles is at the basis of the rich colors of stained glass in medieval buildings or of the sky at sundawn and sunset, and is widely exploited for high-tech applications like the fabrication of integrated circuits. The shape and size of a nanoparticle completely determine the outgoing directions of the scattered light, […]

Finding a needle in a haystack
Tracking the position of a single particle within opaque samples, such as paint, foam, and tissue, is a major challenge in optics. The difficulty of this challenge is comparable to finding a needle in a haystack, but in this case, the needle has the same physics as the straw. A team of researchers from the […]

Confining classical and quantum waves by crystals
Manipulating elusive waves like light, sound or electrons, in periodic structures or crystals, has something mysterious. We already know that confining – or ‘locking up’ – of waves is possible by deliberately introducing tailored deviations from perfect periodicity into the crystal. But how exactly are the waves locked up? Are they confined in all dimensions […]

Master’s Thesis defence of Pieter van Essen
On September 23, 2022, Pieter van Essen successfully defended his Master’s thesis titled “Controlling the emission of quantum dots with silicon photonic crystals“. The project was supervised by Timon Vreman and prof. Willem Vos. Congratulations!

Optics Netherlands Summer School held at Enschede
On the 27th and 28th of September, the first summer school “Optics Netherlands” was held at Enschede, hosted by COPS. On these two days, we had in-depth optics courses given by academic partners, industrial partners, and Postdocs. Plenty of knowledge to be gained- not only for the Ph.D. students- and ample opportunity to get to […]

Linda Bitenc joins COPS
It is a pleasure to announce that Linda Bitenc (BSc., University of Ljubljana) has joined COPS for a three-month Erasmus internship. During her time at COPS, Linda will work on a setup to measure lateral scattering from 2D scattering samples with randomly placed Si pillars.

Shun Takahashi comes to COPS
It’s a great pleasure to announce that Dr. Shun Takahashi has arrived at COPS from Kyoto Institute of Technology in Kyoto, Japan, for a three month sabbatical stay. With his experience in photonic crystal fabrication and nano-optics, specializing in GaAs, there is much to be learned from him. We hope that he will find his […]

Bert Mulder finishes nanophotonics project
Last month, Bert Mulder finished a practical project as part of the nanophotonics program. He worked on systematic, spatially resolved, reflectivity measurements of 3D photonic crystals. His automation of the setup will be used for a long time to come and his (incredibly large) set of data has answered and raised many questions.
