Prof. Willem Vos

This spring, Willem Vos, Melissa Goodwin and Mike Dikkers from COPS and MESA+ Nanolab visited the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) in Chōfu, Tokyo. UEC specialises in the disciplines of computer science, the physical sciences, engineering and technology and was founded in 1918 as the Technical Institute for Wireless-Communications. We visited the group of prof. Takeyoshi Tajiri in the Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering. In 2016 Takeyoshi spent two months doing experiments at COPS (with Diana Grishina) and in 2020, Tajiri and COPS published a paper in Phys. Rev. B on reflectivity of thin GaAs photonic woodpile crystals (click!)

After a seminar by Willem Vos, Takeyoshi was so kind to show us the impressive research facilities. The extensive tour included an extensive visit of UECs cleanroom facilities, including an impressively large MOCVD setup to grow finely detailed III-V semiconductor nanostructures.  Watashitachi o michibiite kudasatte arigatō!
