Talk presented on the occasion of the bestowement of the Descartes-Huygens Prize by French Ambassador mr. Laurent Pic. It consists of a mixture of nanophotonics highlights, food-for-thought on societal issues (“innovation-TGV”, funding for young researchers, Dutch science policy), and thanks to many colleagues. Simon Huisman, a recent PhD graduate with both the COPS and OS groups at the University of Twente, talks about an interesting phenomenon which earned the COPS group a picture on the cover of Nature: imaging through opaque layers. With a live setup Simon shows that with the aid of lasers it is possible to look through opaque objects, such as milk or paper. He talks about the consequences of this new technology.

In this presentation for the graduation as a Master of Science in both Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics, Kurt Peek discusses the effects of a particular source of phase errors – phase truncation in direct digital chirp synthesizers – on the performance of a model FMCW-Doppler radar. He also discusses a novel algorithm for compensating phase errors in the transmitted signal by digital post-processing of the dechirped signal. Finally, the applicability is noted of this algorithm to the optical analog of FMCW radar, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). We thank scientists from Thales (Hengelo) for their support and hosting part of this project.
