On September 26, 2023, after 14788 working days at the UT, of which 7939 days spent at COPS, the day of retirement has inevitably arrived for Cock Harteveld. Not yet completely letting go of COPS, Cock will support projects for one day a week, such as supervising Saxion HBO project students, or installing a new ultrafast time-resolved superconducting single-photon detector (and its dedicated cryostat and vacuum apparatus, thanks to NWO-TTW for support!)Otherwise, Cock will be very busy with his house and his sailing boat. Soon he will enjoy even more time sailing, with family and friends, and planning the next dynamic stages of his career.
** COPS thanks Cock very, very, very deeply for his wonderful help with all things technical in the lab, for maintaining a wonderful personal atmosphere at COPS including much personal advice to all “young ones”, for brilliant solutions during (too many!) moving operations and some inevitable lab mishaps (thanks FB!), for beautiful 3D silicon photonic crystals etched in the MESA+ Nanolab, etc. etc. etc. We wish him all the best in his next life stage, in excellent loving company, and in solid health!
To celebrate Cock’s next step, a party was held in his honor where many old and new friends came to celebrate. In classic tradition, there was a “No Mercy production” sketch (Monty Python’s “the Bruces” from the Philosophy department of the University of Woolloomooloo transplanted to “the Cocks” at COPS) where Cock finally met his secret twin brother 🙂
