As of July 2018, the University of Twente and the Mesa+ institute welcome a new member to the spin-off family, continuing the remarkable success of the most entrepreneurial university. The high tech solar company ETC Solar B.V. was founded by Thomas Russell (Caltech, TU Delft graduate), Rebecca Saive (Assistant Professor at UT/COPS), and Harry Atwater (Professor at Caltech). ETC Solar B.V. commercializes a world-record solar cell front contact technology that leads to ~5% power output increase of solar cells and modules, a giant leap forward towards the theoretical efficiency limit. ETC Solar B.V. leveraged the strong background of the team in light-management and advanced photonic design to develop a new front contact geometry that mitigates shading loss, the largest single contribution to practical power loss in solar cells. ETC Solar B.V. is a daughter of the award winning Caltech spin-off ETC Solar LLC.
