Abstract

We study (1+1)Dtransverse localization of electromagnetic radiation atmicrowave frequencies directly by two-dimensional spatial scans. Sincethe longitudinal direction can be mapped onto time, our experimentsprovide unique snapshots of the buildup of localizedwaves. The evolutionof thewave functions is comparedwith semianalytical calculations.Studies beyond ensemble averages reveal counterintuitive surprises.Oscillations of the wave functions are observed in space and explainedin terms of a beating between the eigenstates.
