Abstract

The quest for developing ever stronger interacting photonic materials has caused the birth of a widely expanding research field. Successful achievement of very strong elastic interaction between light and matter would allow demonstration of conceptually new physical phenomena, among which Anderson localization [1] and a full photonic band gap [2, 3] are prime examples. Experimental realization of these phenomena would open new avenues in control and manipulation of light and matter [4], and could lead to fascinating new developments in quantum optics.
