Abstract

We systematically study the presence of narrow spectral features in awide variety of random laser samples. Less gain or stronger scatteringare shown to lead to a crossover from spiky to smooth spectra. Adecomposition of random laser spectra into a set of Lorentzians providesunprecedented detail in the analysis of random laser spectra. We suggestan interpretation in terms of mode competition that enables anunderstanding of the observed experimental trends. In thisinterpretation, smooth random laser spectra are a consequence ofcompeting modes for which the loss and gain are proportional. Spectralspikes are associated with modes that are uncoupled from the modecompetition in the bulk of the sample.
