Abstract

The emission properties of a molecular light source depend on itsoptical and chemical environment. This dependence, however, is differentfor various light sources. We present a general classification ofsources by introducing the concepts of Constant Amplitude and ConstantPower Sources. The unforeseen consequences of this classification areillustrated for photonic studies by random laser experiments. Comparisonof the experimental results with properly customized rate equationsidentifies the type of light source in the gain medium and an estimatefor its quantum efficiency. Our results require a major revision ofsource studies in multiple scattering media.
